The Former Villa of Fukushima Karokuro

Emperor Shomu’s visit to Wakanoura marked the area as a picturesque landscape to be admired by artists and nobles alike. Currently, the region has many traditional Japanese inns and villas, making it an ideal getaway close to the city. At the heart of Wakanoura stands the Former Villa of Fukushima Karokuro. Constructed in 1929, the stylish modern building features bold colors and integrates a strolling garden backdropped by Mt. Tengu. The sukiya style architecture offers a rustic simplicity, while preserving outward views from both the garden and the approach to Tamatsushima Shrine. The exposed crystalline schist and natural rock face accentuate the garden, with a pond carved from the east side to form a central island. To the west, a large pine tree protrudes from the stone face, offering a striking view.

Kyaraiwa (Agarwood Stone)

Admired since ancient times for its breathtaking views, Wakanoura features ocean expanses, islands and mountains that converge upon tidal flats. The vast natural landscape encompasses the Tamatsushima area: Mt. Tengu, Mt. Imose, Mt. Kagami, Mt. Funato, Mt. Myoken and Mt. Ungai. Man’yo poet Yamabe no Akahito penned the scenery into poetry: “O jeweled weeds on / Islands’ rocky shores untamed / ‘long the ebbing sea / How I may mourn were you to / Vanish ‘hind the rising tides.” Here, “rocky shores untamed” may refer to the rough stone surface of Mt. Tengu and Mt. Imose, likened to agarwood for its unique texture.
